5 Hobbies to Do From Home

Whether you’re an adventurer or a homebody, having hobbies you can do from home is a great option for winding down at the end of the long day. Maybe you’ve been interested in acquiring a hobby but are concerned that you must be particularly gifted or skilled. The good news is, you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy a hobby, whatever it is. But if you’d like to be excellent at your hobby of choice, there are an abundance of free learning tools and resources accessible from the comfort of your own home!

If you feel like you don’t have enough spare time to enjoy a hobby, TLC Home Services can take one major task off your plate – home cleaning! You don’t have to abandon your self-care for the sake of home tasks – leave the cleaning to us.

In the meantime, if you aren’t sure how to choose a home hobby, here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Needlework

Whether knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross stitch, or sewing, there are a variety of options of needlework to learn! There’s nothing to lose. If you’re not sure if you’d like to invest financially, giving one of these hobbies a try is inexpensive since you can practice with a small sample of thread on scrap cloth. You will have to purchase needles/hooks for all of these, but many items can be found used at thrift stores or online marketplaces at low cost. If you’re looking for stitching tutorials, you can find books at your local library, or find free tutorial videos here:

2. Learn an Instrument

This hobby may cost more up front, but depending on which instrument you choose, it’s likely you can find a secondhand instrument at a low cost or borrow an instrument from a friend. If you’d prefer taking private lessons, that’s of course an option, but there are perhaps hundreds of free instrument tutorials online from which to learn! We recommend starting at the very beginning and watching some free videos on music theory before you start, especially if you don’t have any previous experience with music or instruments.

3. Read

One thing that makes reading such a wonderful hobby is how versatile the subject matter is and how many different genres there are. Whether you’re interested in mystery novels, home improvement books, historical biographies, or any other topic, there’s likely a book written about it! And reading can be completely free to you if you access books through your local library. Whether you’re someone who likes physical books, eBooks or audiobooks, it all counts. Ask your library if they have access to subscriptions like Libby or Hoopla for free access to eBooks and audiobooks.

4. Paint/Draw

We know this hobby in particular can be a bit intimidating for many who don’t feel they have natural artistic abilities, but don’t let it stop you from giving painting or drawing a shot! As we said above, you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy a hobby. Paint or draw whatever you want to – it doesn’t have to be good, and you don’t have to show anyone. If it interests you, try it. Start off by sketching with some regular pencils and some Dollar Store water colors to fill in your drawings with color. What do you have to lose? Give it a go! Here’s a beginner drawing tutorial you can reference.

5. Cook/Bake

Cooking and baking are wonderful hobbies for many reasons, but they’re especially practical (and fun) in that you can eat what you make. Experimenting with food not only is a great form of art and expression but also a pathway to education, discovery and hospitality. By using a variety of spices and ingredients, you can taste the flavors of many different lands and cultures. In addition, the smell of a home-cooked meal or freshly baked dessert is a welcoming asset to your home. Whether you choose to make savory meals or sweet desserts, cooking and baking are excellent hobby choices that you can enjoy right from your home kitchen.
